HTC Responds to Apple Patent Lawsuit

Friday, March 19th, 2010

htc_wrath_of_kahn

HTC has sent out a press release in response to the patent infringement lawsuit Apple recently fired in their direction. CEO Peter Chou is quoted:

“HTC disagrees with Apple’s actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always done, but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience possible.”

The full presser lists out all of HTC’s “firsts” in the industry but gives no indication about what, if any, counter-suit and patent infringement claims of their own they might use to return fire.

We did say this could take years, right?

Gracie Gear main 4

Here we have the Gracie Gear sports tops with handy PowerPouch for your iPhones or iPods for about $25.00 to $50.00. Gracie calls it the handsfree experience and yes, it is liberating. These tops are great for anyone who enjoys getting fit and for those who simply want to look like they are getting fit (I’m eating chocolate as I write this!).

Stay with us till after the break to find out more about Gracie Gear and how to enter the giveaway !

Design

The tops are made of a very strong and comfortable polyester spandex blend. They give your body lots of mobility without sacrificing support where you need it. The Racer back allows you to move around with ease and comfort. The high necked front on the tops also give you much more coverage.

iPhone PowerPouch

The PowerPouch is a wonderful three pocket design with a zipper enclosure so that everything stays in place. It has a small hole in the top side for your headphone wire, which allows the zipper to stay securely closed as you listen to the latest TiPB Live podcast. You can carry your keys and money in one compartment and not worry that your iPhone will be damaged or — gasp! — fall out. The loop on your shoulder strap keeps your earphone wire neatly in place as you train.

The Giveaway

This one is for the ladies only. (Sorry guys, you’ve had plenty of turns!) Gracie Gear [Gracie Gear Shop Link] has graciously offered to give away five (5) shirts to our TiPB readers. Just choose one of the three shirts displayed in the gallery (Black bra top, Yellow bra top, or Blue halter top) and leave a reply on our TiPb Forums thread telling us which you want, and telling Gracie what you think of their gear (don’t be shy to make suggestions!)

Apple Board Member Jerome B. York, 1938-2010

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Jerry York tribute on Apple.com
Apple director Jerome B. York passed away today at the age of 71. President and CEO of Harwinton Capital, former CFO of IBM and Chrysler, and former vice chairman of Tracinda, he joined Apple’s board when Steve Jobs came back to the company. Apple’s CEO had the following to say:

“Jerry joined Apple’s Board in 1997 when most doubted the company’s future. He has been a pillar of financial and business expertise and insight on our Board for over a dozen years. It’s been a privilege to know and work with Jerry, and I’m going to miss him a lot.”

Apple is also paying their respect via the Apple.com home page (pictured above).

All of our hearts and condolences go out to the York family.

NAVIGON Brings MyRegion Turn-by-Turn Navigation to iPhone

Friday, March 19th, 2010

NAVIGON MyRegion

NAVIGON’s new MyRegion is a customizable version of their turn-by-turn MobileNavigator app for iPhone that basically lets you buy just the navigation you need, when you need it, and expand via in-app purchase later.

Three “regions” are available in the US — Western [iTunes link], Central [iTunes link], and Eastern [iTunes link]. Each region is currently on sale for $24.99 until April 12, at which point they’ll be regularly priced at $29.99. Getting an additional region via in-app purchase will cost $12.99 on sale ($14.99 regularly).

What’s included?

NAVIGON MyRegion includes all the features and capabilities as MobileNavigator 1.4 plus NAVIGON MyRoutes. This new feature will be added to MobileNavigator North America via an upcoming update to 1.5.0 due this spring. NAVIGON MyRoutes is an industry first feature that learns from the users driving style to provide customized and better route recommendations. The feature also offers up to two alternative routes clearly displayed on a map including ETA, distance and driving time. This lets user choose the route that best serves their individual situation.

If you don’t already have MobileNavigator and on-board maps are a must-have but not necessarily a have-all, give MyRegion a shot and let us know what you think!

Flash-Free Versions of NPR, Wall Street Journal Web Sites Coming for iPad

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

iPad_flash

All Things Digital is reporting that NPR along with The Wall Street Journal are just a few of the big-name media outlets preparing Flash-free versions of their respective sites specifically for Apple’s new iPad.

While National Public Radio is scrambling to have their iPad application available for the iPad release date, they are also putting the finishing touches on their app alternative solution for users to listen to their programming directly from the iPad on April 3rd.

“Use the iPad’s browser to visit NPR.org, which will detect that it’s being viewed with Apple’s device and serve up a custom-built site. This means no trace of Adobe’s (ADBE) Flash, which is used to power graphics and media on the site.”

The Wall Street Journal will also have their Flash-free, iPad specific, front page in a few short weeks. However, the deeper you click into their site you will find that Flash does still exist. That’s certainly understandable given how large the site is and how deeply Flash content, especially video and advertising, has been integrated. Detecting iPad Safari’s unique user agent string might be easy enough (that’s how so many sites detect and deliver iPhone optimized web sites already), but setting up complete mirrors absent Flash is by no means a simple task and may not be a viable solution for those sites out there that depend on Flash to display most of their content. (Though hopefully it will cause sites that use Flash for no reason — we’re looking at you restaurants! — to rethink the decision and switch to more basic, searchable, and friendly standards based technologies).

As the battle between Adobe and Apple over Flash continues to heat up, it’s interesting to see where the chips are falling. Is not having Flash on the iPad or iPhone still a concern to you? Let us (and them) know how you feel in the comments!

Apple Updates iWork.com with Better Interface for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

102918-iwork_com

MacRumors reports on an email being sent to users of Apple’s iWork.com document sharing site that outlines a few updates to the service, including one for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad:

Refined user interface. A redesigned Sign In and Shared Documents page for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch makes it easy to access your documents while on the go. The new interface and improved scrolling help you find your shared documents faster. Visit www.iwork.com from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to view your shared documents.

iWork.com has been in beta since it was introduced at Macworld 2009 and it’s still unclear exactly how much effort Apple is putting into it compared to say iWork touch recently unveiled for the iPad, and whether or not Apple will ever release full-on Web App versions of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote to compete with Google Docs and Microsoft’s new Office 2010 Online.

If you use iWork.com, let us know what you think of the changes.

UPDATE: Apple to No Longer Carry iPhone, iPod Screen Protectors?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

no_screen_protector

UPDATE: Macworld is saying the reason may be the difficulty in applying the screen protectors and associated increase in return rates. (They should just send people to Georgia’s video, embedded again below for satiric effect).

iLounge is reporting that Apple Retail and Apple Online will no longer carry screen protectors for iPhone, iPod, or anything else, either sold separately or packaged with cases. That includes plain protectors, anti-glare, privacy, mirror, or any other kind of film meant to be placed over an iPhone or iPod screen. iLounge further speculates this is a move by Apple meant to emphasize the durability of their screens — you don’t need no stinkin’ protector, so to speak.

We have trouble believing any of this; it sounds unbelievable. If true, manufacturers will simply stop bundling screen protectors with their cases and customers will have to purchase them separately from a different, non-Apple channel [like the TiPb Store -- cheap plug!]

Hopefully there’s some misunderstanding here but we’ll keep an eye on the story and update as it develops. Meanwhile let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Quick App: GQ Magazine

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

CoverThere is a lot of buzz around magazines coming to the iPad, what about the iPhone? GQ Magazine already has an app for that and it’s rather slick. The app is free and you can buy issues with in-app purchasing for $1.99 a piece. Once the app is installed you have a store to buy your issue. The issues are quite large, so you will want to likely download them over Wi-Fi to easy your viewing pleasure.

Once you downloaded and opened an issue, you are presented with a table of contents. Tap the section you want to read. Depending on the section there are links to pictures, video and font size. Rotate your device to landscape and you are given a virtual representation of the print issue. You can use the slider on the bottom to navigate. I really like this feature, you get the best of both worlds; portrait for an optimized iPhone view and rotate for magazine view.

I am impressed with this effort on the iPhone and I am looking forward to an iPad version. Check after the break for more pics!
